Transportation Referendum Receives Coveted Endorsement from the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg

News, Press Release
Historic Organization’s Endorsement Underscores Commitment to Growth and Community Progress for all of Mecklenburg County

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 3, 2025) – The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (BPC), one of the region’s most influential and respected civic organizations, has officially endorsed the one-percent sales tax transportation referendum. The endorsement passed overwhelmingly among members, marking a pivotal moment in the community-wide effort to secure better mobility, improved infrastructure and greater access for all Mecklenburg County residents.

Since its founding in 1965, the BPC has served as a guiding voice for justice, civic participation and the advancement of African Americans and other underrepresented communities in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. Its endorsement of the transportation referendum reflects both the urgency and the promise of building a modern transportation system that meets the needs of a rapidly growing region, as well as African Americans throughout the county.

Jocelyn Jones-Nolley, chair of the Black Political Caucus, stated:

“This overwhelming vote of support demonstrates the unity of our members in recognizing the importance of this referendum to Mecklenburg County’s future. We look forward to partnering with the Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority and other stakeholders to ensure community concerns are prioritized and addressed, and that the benefits of this investment are shared broadly across all neighborhoods. This is about ensuring growth that works for everyone.”

The BPC’s endorsement adds significant momentum to the referendum campaign, joining a growing list of civic, business and community leaders who recognize the once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in safer roads, expanded transit, synchronized traffic lights and improved access to jobs and services.

At-Large City Councilmember James Mitchell, a longtime BPC member, underscored the importance of this moment:

“The Black Political Caucus has long been a cornerstone of civic leadership in Charlotte. Our endorsement of the referendum reflects both the values of the organization and the future we want for this community—a future where transportation connects people to opportunity, strengthens neighborhoods and supports growth for decades to come.”

With the endorsement of the Black Political Caucus, the referendum continues to build the broad, diverse coalition needed to pass this critical measure in November.

Early voting begins Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov 4, 2025. Voters will decide whether to approve a one-percent sales tax to fund transportation investments for the next several decades.
